Add the 1/2 cup of dry basmati rice and 3/4 cup of water into cooking pot and bring to a boil. Then, simmer with a lid for exactly 17 minutes.
Meanwhile, slice the 1 cup of yellow onion into thinly. Mince the 3 cloves of garlic. Add both to a frying pan on a medium heat, along with the 3 tsp of olive oil and 1/2 tsp of black pepper. Cook for 5 minutes or until tender. Then, add the soy sauce over the top and cook for another 1 minute while stirring.
Place the rice into a bowl and place the onion and garlic on top.
